Within two weeks HP will release an optional update that will allow certain printer models of the company to use ink cartridges from third parties again. A recent firmware update made an end to that possibility.
It’s unclear how many users have been affected by the update, which caused HP Officejet Pro printers to no longer accept cartridges from third parties.
HP would have decided to adjust its software to protect its printers and to better secure the communication between cartridge and printer. The change surfaced after cartridge supplier 123inkt sent out an email to its customers, revealing the third party ink blockade.
Printer manufacturers have been experimenting with ways to discourage the use of third party ink cartridges for years, such as the implementation of special chips on cartridges and warning messages. Makers of alternative cartridges make use of cloned chips.
